Nuclear Power Plant Sirens across New Jersey

New Jersey has a total of three nuclear power stations, with two of the units being currently operational as of 2026. The sirens were installed as a precaution. All three of the power plants used sirens from Alerting Communicators of America, also known as ACA sirens. They were installed at all three power plants, Oyster Creek, Hope Creek, and Salem Creek.

New Jersey Nuclear Power Plant Emergency Warning Siren History

Oyster Creek

Warning Siren History

The sirens for Oyster Creek comprised 11 ACA Cyclone 125s, 17 ACA Allertor 125s, and 3 ACA Banshees 115s. This system would last a short time before being upgraded with ACA Cyclone 125s  and ACA Banshees 115s in the 1980s. This lasted until 2012/2013, when the system was replaced after failing to sound during Hurricane Sandy. The sirens were replaced by American Signal Corporation's Tempest 128 sirens. Oyster Creek unfortunately shut down in 2018, and therefore, all of the sirens are now inactive for that power plant. They are still a sight to behold, though.

Warning Siren History

The sirens for the Hope and Salem Creek Nuclear Power Plants had 7 ACA P-10 sirens, 18 ACA P-15 sirens, 8 ACA Cyclone 125 sirens, and 2 ACA Banshee 115 sirens. Around 2006, the power plants replaced their system with American Signal Corporation Tempest 121 sirens around 2006 for an unknown reason. This system still serves the power plant today. The sirens for Salem and Hope Creek are still operational.
